Nurturing Wellbeing: A Week of Exploration and Mindfulness at Sunny Days

At Sunny Days, we understand how important well-being is to a child’s development, impacting their ability to learn, grow, and thrive. In celebration of World Mental Health Day, last week at Sunny Days we focused on activities designed to support and enhance the wellbeing of the children.

A Calm Space for Reflection

Our 'home corner' was transformed into a sparkling sensory retreat, providing a peaceful space for the children to relax and regulate their emotions. Here, they were able to pause, free from distractions, helping their minds rest and reset. This sensory zone became a place where they could experience calm and self-regulation, allowing for important moments of quiet reflection.

Talking About Emotions

As part of our focus on emotional well-being, we spent time talking about different emotions and how they can affect our feelings. By normalising emotions, we helped the children to better understand their own feelings and the feelings of others. This practice is a valuable way to promote mindfulness and emotional intelligence, encouraging the children to recognise and process their emotions in a healthy and supportive way.

Exploring Nature and Wellbeing

The outdoors is naturally linked to improved well-being, so we took full advantage of the wonders of nature throughout the week. We ventured deep into the woods, where we lay on the forest floor listening to the gentle sound of rain falling and watching the wind rustling the leaves above us. Later in the week, when the sun made an appearance, we took to the hilltop, soaking up the warmth and absorbing much-needed vitamin D.

One particularly joyful activity involved the children removing their shoes and socks to explore the soft textures of moss underfoot. It was heart-warming to see them running barefoot through the long grass and rolling down the hill, fully engaging with the natural world around them.

Healthy Eating in Action

As part of our focus on healthy eating, we made hearty soup on the fire. The children eagerly took part in chopping the vegetables, learning about the importance of nutritious food in a hands-on and engaging way. This activity not only supported their understanding of healthy eating but also provided a sense of accomplishment as they worked together to prepare a delicious snack.

Creative Expression Indoors

Indoors, we explored creativity and expression through various activities. The children sang and played musical instruments, danced with flowing scarves, and painted beautiful watercolour scenes on blocks of ice, embracing the joy of artistic expression.
